Bernard Barani

Deputy Head of Unit "Future Connectivity Systems" European Commission DG CONNECT

Bernard Barani joined the European Commission (EC) in 1994 after 11 years as a communications engineer in the industry and with ESA. In the EC, he has been steering EU wireless R&I for over 20 years.

After being responsible for the 5G Public Private Partnership, he currently leads the definition and implementation of the European R&I program “Smart Networks and Services (6G)” with the industry, covering the 2021-2027 time frame. The main field of his responsibilities covers strategic R&D planning and implementation for beyond 5G/6G systems, standardization, international cooperation, demonstration, and pilot programs.

Bernard is also the vice chairman of the Steering committee of the EUCNC conference, the showcasing event for telecom research sponsored by the EU. He has an engineering degree from the “Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications de Bretagne” and is also a Fellow of WWRF (Wireless World Research Forum).
